| India is home to several
top class residential schools. Most of them are modeled on the British
system of residential schools. It is considered a matter of great
privilege to have received education through such schools.
Residential schools are those where children have their education
and simultaneously reside in the school along with other students
and teachers. After calls hours are spent in these residential houses,
where there are usually bedrooms or dormitories, a dining area,
a study are a, a recreational hall, small kitchen and so on. There
are staff members put in charge of the house along with a matron
and a tutor. The residential schools in India generally have three
terms at the end of which holidays are given and students can go
home.
Typically a residential school is built on acres of land so as
to encompass playing grounds, school buildings and so on. They are
usually located away from the din and bustle of the city to give
a cleaner an unpolluted environment. Several popular residential
schools are located in the hill stations like Ooty, Mussorie Dehra
Dun and so on . The residential schools are usually self sufficient
units with all the facilities of day to day use.
Boarding schools are a kind of residential schools, but all residential
schools are not boarding schools. Residential schools may not just
include students doing their basic schooling. But there can be other
types like Therapeautic schools which is meant for students to counter
certain disabilities like socialization problems, Obsessive compulsive
disorder and so on .There can be other residential schools for children
without these disabilities but with certain special educational
needs. Residential schools also exist in the form of specialist
schools such as stage schools or choir schools. Schools where students
stay and get educated in a commune whilst meeting their parents
everyday for a certain period of time like those in Israel also
come under the category of residential schools.
There has been a steady improvement in the number and the quality
of the residential schools. It is however often regarded that these
schools are a monopoly of the creamy layer of the society as ti
can be quite expensive. However all residential schools are not
equally expensive and there is a growing trend of putting more and
more students in here
