Those who practice Hapkido would like me to gush about the wonderful and rigorous exercises that the schools demonstrate. Maybe even the rough sparring that the martial artists engage in.

Hapkido - Most physical confrontations take place in specific ranges, which are commonly designated as kicking, punching, trapping and grappling.

Punching range, Hapkido Karate:   Just inside kicking range hand techniques take over. The punching range techniques don't usually refer to boxing style punches;

it is mostly straight karate style punching and open hand strikes. However, I like to use boxing style training to increase accuracy, speed and strength.

Trapping range, ,  Hapkido Karate:  Move a little closer to your opponent and you enter the trapping range, this is where attacking arms get deflected and immobilized, and knees, elbows and head bunts are smartly put to use.

Trapping techniques help to stop an aggressor and render their attack ineffective.Kajukenbo gained it's reputation for being brutally effective decades ago in the U.S. Territory of Hawaii. In the Hawaii of the 1940s the enemy was not the ancient battlefield soldier, it was the common street criminal.

Instead of swords and spears he armed himself with knives, clubs, and guns. Even when unarmed he did not fight by any rules. He punched, kicked, gouged, bit, and stomped.

By combining techniques from tang soo do, judo, jujitsu, kenpo and kung fu, the kajukenbo stylist can defend himself in many ways. He can use soft circular kung fu techniques to evade and strike. Or he can use judo or jujitsu to throw an attacker to the ground or restrain and control him.
