Aikido is a martial art, which was created in the 1920s by Morihei Ueshiba, a master who attained the highest level in the traditional Japanese martial arts. There are no competitions in Aikido; an aggressor's attack may be stopped harming or injuring him/her.

Aikido is a path which aspires for the unity of mankind, the unification of the self with the universe, the union of Spirit and Matter. Seen as such, and in the perspective of the integral development of the being as emphasized, it is no wonder that Aikido has always been greatly valued in Auroville.

The art of Aikido has been introduced in Auroville by André Pithon who is presently teaching in Tahiti, then taught by Aurovilians Ananda and Michiko, and finally by Aurovilians Serge and Luisa, who both studied in Paris for two years with Jacques Bonemaison, 6th dan, following the teaching of Tamura Sensei Shihan himself a close disciple of the founder.

When you learn Aikido Karate, you are first introduced to individual techniques, such as single blocks and strikes. If we compare learning Karate to learning a new language, you can think of these like the letters of the alphabet. Several techniques strung together may form words.

The practice of Aikido Karate basic techniques is often simply called “basics”, or Kihon in Japanese. To stay with this analogy, sentences are thus formed by stringing.

Several basic techniques together, for example, in Kihon Ido, which means, “moving basics”, because you step and thus move your body while you block and/or strike.

Typical for Aikido Karate are Katas. A Kata is a sequence of movements used for training and to demonstrate technique. In the context of learning Karate, learing Katas then can be akin learning how to form paragraphs.

The basics in the empty hand & foot techniques of Arnis are to develop mind and body coordination, balance, and timing. In learning and developing the basic techniques the student gains the knowledge and develops power in execution.
